Celtic Cross reading

The most famous tarot spread. Ten cards for situations with many sides, when you want the whole picture.

What is it about?
Your question stays on your device. We do not save it.

What the Celtic Cross shows

The first six cards form a cross: the heart of the situation, what crosses it, its deeper root, the recent past, the best possible outcome and the near future. The four cards beside it form a staff: your own attitude, the people and forces around you, your hopes and fears, and the outcome.

Because it has so many positions, the Celtic Cross rewards slow reading. Start with the first two cards, which set the theme, and the last card, which shows the direction. Then fill in the rest. Our Celtic Cross guide explains each position.

Questions and answers

Is the Celtic Cross good for beginners?
It can feel like a lot at first. If you are new to tarot, try the three-card spread first, then come back to the Celtic Cross.
What is the most important card in the Celtic Cross?
The first card, the heart of the matter, sets the theme. The tenth card, the outcome, shows where things are heading.
Why is “hopes and fears” one position?
What we hope for and what we fear are often two sides of the same thing. Read the card both ways and see which feels true.
How long does a Celtic Cross reading take?
Drawing takes a minute. Reading it properly can take ten minutes or more, which is part of its value.
