The three-card tarot spread, explained
If you only ever learn one tarot spread, make it this one. Three cards are enough to tell a story and few enough to keep the whole thing in your head. Experienced readers use it every day, and it is the easiest place for a beginner to start.
The classic layout: past, present, future
The cards are laid out left to right. The first describes what is behind you that still shapes the situation, the second where you stand now, and the third where things are heading if nothing changes. That last part is important. The future card describes a direction, not a fixed fate. If you do not like where it points, the other two cards often show what to adjust.
How to read the three together
Start with each card in its own position. Then step back and look for the thread between them:
- Movement. Does the energy rise from a hard past card to a brighter future card, or fall? A rising line suggests things are improving; a falling one is a nudge to change course.
- Suits. Two or three cards from one suit tell you where the story lives. Cups point to feelings and relationships, Wands to energy and ambition, Swords to thoughts, decisions and conflict, Pentacles to work, money and the body.
- Major Arcana. A Major Arcana card marks a bigger theme. If the present card is a Major, the situation is more significant than it might feel.
- Reversals. A reversed card in the past position often means something unresolved. In the future position it suggests delay or a lesson still to learn.
An example
Imagine a question about a job you are unhappy in. You draw the Eight of Pentacles in the past, the Four of Cups in the present and the Page of Wands in the future. Read together: you worked hard and built real skill (Eight of Pentacles), but now you feel flat and are not noticing new offers (Four of Cups). Ahead lies a fresh, curious start (Page of Wands). The story is clear: it is time to look up and explore.
Other ways to use three cards
The same layout works with different positions. A few useful ones:
- Situation, obstacle, advice
- What to keep, what to release, what to welcome
- Mind, body, spirit
- Option A, option B, what you need to know to choose
For choosing between options, our tarot decision maker draws a card for each one automatically.
