Death tarot card from the 1909 Rider–Waite–Smith deck

Death

Upright
endings, transformation, transition
Reversed
resisting change, stagnation, fear of endings
Yes or no
Not yet clear (reversed: no)

The image

A skeleton in black armour rides a white horse carrying a banner with a white rose, while a king falls and others kneel before him. In the distance the sun rises between two towers. It is the card of endings that make room for something new.

Upright meaning

In general

This card rarely means physical death. It signals that a chapter is closing. Let it end with grace; something new can only grow once you make space for it.

In love

A relationship, or an old way of relating, is transforming. Letting go of what no longer works opens the door to a deeper or different kind of love.

At work

A job, project or role is coming to an end, or changing beyond recognition. Treat it as a transition, not a failure.

With money

An old financial pattern is ending. Close what needs closing and start fresh with clearer habits.

Reversed meaning

In general

You are holding on to something that has already ended. Change is happening either way; accepting it will make the transition far easier.

In love

Clinging to the past is keeping you from moving forward. Allow yourself to grieve what is over.

At work

Fear of change is keeping you in a situation that no longer fits. Start planning your next step.

With money

Old habits are holding your finances back. Be willing to let go of what is not working.
